Russia’s increasing representation at the recent BRICS summit holds significant symbolic importance, according to a Russia affairs expert. The Russian government aims to demonstrate robust international support amidst its isolation due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Professor Jón Ólafsson asserts, “Russians are making more of this alliance than is warranted.” Although Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to highlight a strong unity among BRICS nations in backing Russia’s actions, he notes that the actual cooperation between these countries is superficial. “We have not yet seen this BRICS collaboration evolve into a substantial alliance that genuinely aids Russia, despite appearances suggesting it looks quite positive today,” he adds.

The rise in participant numbers at the summit holds strong symbolic value for Russia, serving to project an image of having trustworthy allies and counteracting notions of isolation. This gathering comes at a critical time, as Russia continues to navigate global scrutiny following its actions in Ukraine.
