Finnish MP Ville Merinen takes sick leave amid tense atmosphere in Parliament
The atmosphere within the Finnish Parliament has once again become a topic of discussion, prompted by the announcement from MP Ville Merinen (Social Democrats) that he is taking sick leave. Merinen revealed on social media that one reason for his leave was the tense working atmosphere within the social and health committee, a situation that has been widely acknowledged and discussed for some time.
Markku Jokisipilä, director of the Center for Parliamentary Studies, noted that Parliament has historically had periods marked by particularly harsh rhetoric. However, he pointed out that the communication environment has significantly evolved. According to him, citizens now have access to discussions and criticism through channels that did not previously exist, making the atmosphere more visible.
In a recent survey by Yle, MPs were asked about their workloads. For instance, Petri Honkonen from the Center Party shared his feelings regarding the heavy atmosphere in social media discussions. He noted that the hostile exchanges also affect the work of MPs in Parliament, although he stressed that social media engagement has become an essential part of a legislator’s daily routine, facilitating communication with the public.
Many MPs are active on social media, sharing updates on their work and expressing opinions on current issues, alongside their traditional media visibility. Jokisipilä emphasized that while social media can enhance democracy by allowing citizens to voice their opinions on power dynamics, it also has a darker side, with much of the discourse being quite toxic. Juha Ristamäki, head of Iltalehti’s political department, added that politicians often engage in heated discussions on social media to benefit themselves and their parties, resulting in considerable feedback that sometimes reflects public frustration.
