Police investigate discrimination at memorial event in Haapajärvi
The police have initiated a preliminary investigation into possible discrimination at a memorial event in Haapajärvi. The owner of the venue refused to allow the use of the space for the memorial service due to the sexual orientation of the catering service provider. This investigation is being launched by the police in response to media reports regarding the incident. As discrimination is considered a criminal offense subject to formal charges, the matter does not require a complaint from the affected party.
The business owner previously told Yle that the refusal to rent out the venue was specifically due to the catering provider’s sexual orientation. He further commented, “Gays are not allowed here,” which reflects the discriminatory attitude he exhibited by canceling the memorial event and insulting the attendees and the local pastor.
Additionally, the Equality Ombudsman may autonomously choose to address the issue if deemed appropriate. The potential consequences for discrimination include hefty fines or even imprisonment, and authorities are currently considering whether to pursue further investigation into the Haapajärvi case.
