Financial windfall for elderly residents in Myllykoski, Kouvola, Finland

Myllykoski, a small town with around 6,000 residents in Kouvola, Finland, is experiencing a financial windfall for its elderly community due to a unique legacy from a deceased local resident. Olavi Pokki, who passed away in 2022, left a significant inheritance of three million euros to the city of Kouvola, with the stipulation that the funds be used for the benefit of elderly residents in Myllykoski.

This windfall allows Myllykoski’s seniors to apply for financial assistance for various needs, including hobbies, home help, or group trips. The announcement of the funding has reached many locals, and while it has generally been received positively, only two applications were submitted in the first week. Resident Ritva Harjula expressed caution, noting that people are unsure if the funding is genuine and hope it will be distributed fairly.

Maija Lehtomäki, CEO of the Myllykoski Elderly Foundation, expects more applications to come in closer to the deadline. The foundation plans to distribute between 50,000 to 100,000 euros in its first year, depending on the number of applications received. The goal is to provide ongoing assistance annually.

Community discussions have highlighted the desire for a communal space where seniors could gather and participate in activities. Local entrepreneur Maija Liisa Imboden emphasized the need for such a facility to support social interactions among the elderly.

Residents like Risto Laine, who is 75, are considering assistance for home maintenance tasks, reflecting the growing demand for support as they age. Veli-Matti Korkia-aho noted that local choirs, such as the Metallimiehet group, are also exploring funding to perform in elderly care homes, further enhancing the community’s support network for seniors.
