Kópavogsbær seeks closure of Roðasal nursing home in Iceland following care model shift

The Kópavogsbær Municipality is seeking to close the Roðasal nursing home, which has been operating under a contract with the National Health Insurance for the past 20 years. The local government has expressed concerns that the facility is unsuitable for providing care, indicating that its operations no longer align with the current approach to supporting individuals with memory loss.

Originally, Roðasal was intended for people in the early stages of memory loss, with plans for them to transition to other care facilities as their needs evolved. However, the municipality has shifted towards an integrated model where individuals with memory loss would remain in a single nursing home for their lifespan.

Consequently, Kópavogsbær is proposing to negotiate with the National Health Insurance for the closure of Roðasal and plans to relocate its residents to the new nursing facility Hrafnista at Boðaþing, which is expected to open this spring.
