A protest against planned fare increases by Helsinki Regional Transport Authority (HSL) is taking place today in Helsinki. HSL is proposing an average fare hike of eight percent starting next year. Protesters are gathering outside HSL’s office in East Pasila at the same time HSL’s board is convening for a meeting.

HSL has justified the fare increase by citing the rise in value-added tax from 10% to 14%, costs associated with building and repairing infrastructure, and the withdrawal of climate-related support. The protest, named “For Affordable Public Transport – Stop HSL’s Increases,” aims to highlight the fare hikes amidst rising living costs, tightening social security, and increases in rents by the City of Helsinki’s housing company, Heka.

Additionally, protesters point to the deepening climate crisis, emphasizing the need for swift action at the municipal level to promote public transportation use and reduce transportation emissions. The demonstration is organized by a left-wing group focused on urban issues. The organizers believe that public transport should be accessible to all and that member municipalities must ensure sufficient public funding in the future.

We will provide updates as the story develops.
