Local authorities in West Iceland call for healthcare improvements amid physician shortage

Local authorities in West Iceland are calling for improvements in healthcare services in response to a shortage of physicians in the area. They are advocating for enhanced telehealth services, upgraded healthcare facilities, and an increase in specialized hospital projects to better meet community needs.

The municipalities aim to create attractive conditions for physicians and their families to relocate to the region. They urge the government to take action to develop housing and medical equipment infrastructure.

“There has been a notable shortage of doctors, particularly in the Snæfellsnes region. We are exploring how local authorities can support the staffing of health institutions in West Iceland,” said a representative of the local government association. This past weekend, the association passed a resolution to bolster primary healthcare operations.

The resolution emphasizes the need for the government to ensure that healthcare facilities and equipment are adequately maintained to facilitate the recruitment of qualified personnel. Accessibility to health services is a critical consideration for residents when choosing where to live.

Moreover, local authorities wish to enhance the hospitals in Akranes and Stykkishólmur by expanding their specialized services. The current specialized services include an orthopedic department in Akranes and a back department in Stykkishólmur. The aim is to improve healthcare delivery without incurring high costs by reallocating these projects from urban centers.

In addition, the local authorities have called for the enhancement of digital technology within the healthcare sector, emphasizing the need to resolve existing technical challenges, including those affecting access to health services. They stress the importance of ensuring sufficient staffing to operate these services effectively and enhancing information flow from specialists to reduce unnecessary travel to the capital.
