FarCargo will not resume regular flights to New York with Faroese salmon despite Bakkafrost’s purchase of cargo plane
FarCargo will not resume regular flights to New York with Faroese salmon, despite Bakkafrost’s purchase of a cargo plane specifically for that purpose.
“We will make some direct flights to the USA. However, we will likely not establish regular flights to the USA for the time being,” said Hanus Jacobsen, the director of FarCargo.
Currently, FarCargo operates 10-12 flights weekly from the Faroe Islands to Ireland and Belgium. From there, the salmon is transferred to aircraft bound for the USA and China.
The cargo plane was originally acquired to transport salmon directly to the USA, allowing Americans to enjoy fresh seafood the following day. However, the logistics have since taken a different approach.
“This travel pattern works much better than flying directly to the USA, which was the initial plan, as we can conduct more flights and thus transport more salmon, while also reaching more countries,” Jacobsen explained.
Bakkafrost previously intended to bring food products back to the Faroe Islands on FarCargo’s return flights, but so far, it has been unable to secure suppliers willing to import goods via the cargo plane.
