Mehl accused of inappropriate rhetoric over school closures in Norway
Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl has accused the county governor of “prostituting himself for power,” arguing that the recent school closures contradict the principles upheld by both the Center Party and the Labour Party in government.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre responded to Mehl’s remarks, emphasizing that while she has the right and duty to engage in local issues as an elected official, her choice of words was inappropriate. “Characterizing other politicians’ decisions as prostitution is not acceptable,” he stated, asserting that responsibility for high schools lies within the domain of regional politicians.
Mehl faces criticism for her apparent interference in the school closure debate in her home region, with former Oslo city council leader Raymond Johansen expressing disbelief at her comments. He remarked on social media that in a challenging political climate, she accused a collaborator from the Labour Party of political prostitution while ignoring a mayor who called for aggressive tactics in the debate.
Despite the backlash, Mehl stood by her statements during a recent political program, showing no remorse for her language. She defended her position, citing frustration over county politicians’ lack of consideration for constructive input. The situation has escalated to the point where the Police Security Service has been contacted due to concerns over danger.
Critics like Joakim Ekseth from the Conservative Party argue that Mehl’s involvement in the school closure discussions represents an inappropriate overlap of roles for a justice minister. He condemned her language as unacceptable behavior for a government official, suggesting that this type of discourse could set a troubling precedent. Hanne Alstrup Velure, deputy county mayor from the Conservative Party, called for her resignation, labeling her rhetoric as inflammatory.
The Labour Party, Conservative Party, and Green Party have formed a technical cooperation following last year’s county elections, with the Labour Party holding the county governorship and the Conservatives the deputy position.
