Former Oslo City Council leader for the Labour Party, Raymond Johansen, expressed disbelief on Facebook regarding Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl’s recent statements, describing them as “fuel on the fire.”

In a contentious political environment in Innlandet, Mehl accused the regional council leader from the Labour Party of engaging in “political prostitution.” At the same time, she did not distance herself from a mayor who encouraged aggressive tactics against politicians opposing school closures. Mehl claimed that such closures contradict the agendas of both the Center Party and Labour Party in government.

Mehl faced criticism for her choice of language and perceived role confusion concerning the school closure issue. Despite backlash, she defended her remarks on NRK’s Politisk Kvarter, maintaining that the council leader was willing to compromise principles for power alongside the Conservative Party.

When questioned about her potential conflict of interest, Mehl stated that, as a Member of Parliament from Hedmark for the Center Party, she felt it was essential to voice her opinion in such an important matter.

Joakim Ekseth, the parliamentary group leader for the Conservative Party in Innlandet, criticized Mehl’s involvement in the school closure discussions, labeling her actions as inappropriate for a justice minister. He emphasized that such language should not be expected from a government official and warned that it legitimizes a discourse that could lead to divisiveness, akin to rhetoric observed in the U.S.

Hanne Alstrup Velure, Deputy County Mayor in Innlandet, called for Mehl’s resignation, condemning her provocative language and asserting that her behavior threatens both her credibility and the democratic process in Norway.
