Finland’s 3G network is set to be completely shut down this year. This phase-out will result in some devices reverting to the older 2G network. For the past 20 years, 3G has enabled the functionality of many familiar devices; however, its technology and data transmission speeds have become outdated.

The shutdown of 3G has been gradual and is currently nearing completion across the country. The last operational transmitters are located in Helsinki, Rovaniemi, and Koillismaa, which will cease operations by month’s end. This change will impact devices such as mobile phones older than ten years, older hunting and surveillance cameras, payment terminals, and remote systems in vehicles purchased before 2020.

In vehicles, remote management and emergency call systems rely on 3G. These systems include locking mechanisms, remote controls for fuel-powered heaters, and vehicle data checks. Despite the impending shutdown, the number of inquiries to the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, Traficom, has not surged. Traficom emphasizes that every customer is entitled to a functional phone and broadband service.

Operators like Elisa already deactivated their 3G services last year, while Telia, DNA, and their subsidiary Yhteisverkko are scheduled to finalize their shutdown by year-end. The transition is part of a wider shift to reallocate frequencies for 4G and 5G networks.

While older devices will now utilize the 2G network, this system will remain operational at least until the end of 2029, as operators are required to maintain it. However, some industry experts caution that the older 2G technology is insufficient for real-time applications, particularly in safety and security sectors.
