Fire leads to urgent safety measures at youth treatment center Stuðlar in Iceland

Following a fire at a youth treatment center known as Stuðlar, authorities have taken steps to ensure the safety of the children and young people affected. Those who had the option were sent home to stay with their parents, while a temporary solution was sought until alternative accommodations could be arranged.

Two young individuals fled the facility after the incident, with one having since been located. Ólöf Ásta Farestveit, the director of the Children’s and Family Service, stated that parents of all the children housed at Stuðlar were promptly notified to provide safe shelter for them as necessary arrangements were made.

The facility’s transition to safer conditions was expedited, and the service is now available for children who were previously under care. Farestveit confirmed that all parents were contacted immediately via phone and in person, ensuring that children were supported during this unexpected crisis.

Efforts are underway to restore the facility after the fire, with plans to reopen the treatment center and emergency accommodations at Stuðlar. Meanwhile, a new treatment initiative in Mosfellsbær will be accelerated to provide ongoing support for affected individuals.
