Iceland sees 4% decline in alcohol consumption in 2023 according to Statistics Iceland

New data from Statistics Iceland indicates a 4% decrease in alcohol consumption in Iceland in 2023 compared to the previous year. The average consumption for individuals aged 15 and older dropped from 8.1 liters in 2022 to 7.7 liters in 2023. Notably, the most significant decline was seen in the consumption of strong wines, which decreased by around 13%.

These figures are estimated based on the taxation of alcohol imports and domestic production, and they also include online alcohol sales, as the alcohol tax applies to such transactions as well.

Recently, discussions about alcohol sales and the social impacts of alcohol consumption in Iceland took place at a public forum.
