Ilkka Sasi revises inquiry into Kalervo Kummola’s governance in Tampere

Ilkka Sasi, a former deputy mayor of Tampere, recently revised a council inquiry concerning the behavior of Mayor Kalervo Kummola. This action prompted the Tampere region of the National Coalition Party to reevaluate Sasi’s candidacy for the municipal elections. Initially, Sasi’s inquiry focused on Kummola’s conduct but was updated to address issues of good governance in Tampere, with Kummola’s behavior omitted from the new questions.

In a session of the Tampere city council, Sasi clarified that the update to his inquiry was not an indication of doubts about his candidacy for the National Coalition Party. He explained that the revision responded to widespread discourse concerning Kummola’s actions, especially claims that the original questions were inappropriate.

Sasi’s initial questions were nearly identical to those posed to him by a temporary committee in August, which examined his performance as deputy mayor. Following issues of trust, Sasi was dismissed from his position in September. He noted that the purpose of his inquiry was not to undermine Kummola’s capacity as mayor, but rather to discuss the implementation of good governance principles.

During the council session, SDP councilor Atanas Aleksovski criticized Sasi’s inquiry as personal, a claim Sasi defended by stating that councilors have the right to raise such inquiries. Kummola declined to comment further on the matter, having answered Sasi’s questions during the council session.

Now, Sasi is contemplating whether to continue as a candidate for the National Coalition Party in the municipal elections. His candidacy will be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the party’s regional organization.
