In the past week, multiple reports of disturbances in satellite navigation systems, specifically GNSS and GPS, have emerged from the Gulf of Finland, as stated by the Finnish Coast Guard. These disturbances are impacting maritime traffic throughout the Gulf, leading to potential loss of position data on vessels’ GPS devices and missing information reliant on GPS from electronic navigation systems. Practically, this means the disappearance of a ship’s directional and speed data.
The Coast Guard advises all mariners to ensure navigation using traditional methods, such as marine charts. They emphasize that reliance solely on a mobile phone or boat GPS is insufficient; verifying navigation information through means other than electronic charts is crucial. According to the Coast Guard, many individuals overly trust electronic maps and often forget to observe their surroundings.
It is essential to consult at least two navigation systems and remain vigilant about one’s location, the Coast Guard cautions.
