Central Criminal Police investigates attempted murder case in Åland Islands
The Central Criminal Police is investigating an attempted murder case in Åland Islands, according to the Southwest Finland Police. The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Åland Islands Police.
According to the statement, the suspects allegedly planned to kill an individual in Mariehamn in October 2023 and traveled to Åland to carry out the act. The police have not disclosed whether all suspects traveled to Åland. A weapon, an illegal firearm, has been seized by law enforcement.
“The investigation is being treated as an attempted murder due to the planning and preparation involved,” stated Criminal Commissioner Matti Airaksinen from the Central Criminal Police.
Police indicated they identified the perpetrators in early 2024. Three individuals are currently detained and their case has been forwarded for prosecution. Charges will be processed in the Åland Islands District Court and need to be filed by November 21.
Authorities have yet to reach all individuals suspected of involvement in planning the act. The Central Criminal Police is continuing its preliminary investigation.
