Over the weekend, Politico reported that Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate in the United States, has canceled at least three interviews due to exhaustion. However, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign dismissed these claims. Rani-Henrik Andersson, an associate professor of North American studies at the University of Helsinki, finds the assertions of Trump’s fatigue troubling. He stated that Trump aims to project an image of a strong leader, and any perception of incapacity could influence the election outcome.
Andersson emphasized that these are still rumors and that recent minor fatigue during appearances should not lead to major conclusions. Maria Lindén, a researcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, noted that Trump seems increasingly struggling to stay on topic. She pointed out that his tendency to avoid answering questions is not new, but there is a discernible new confusion. “He may start discussing one topic and suddenly shift to something bizarre, such as the danger of a shark attack versus an electric shock. Such moments raise concerns.”
Trump has also refused several interviews and notably declined a rematch debate with Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Lindén believes this could allow Harris’s campaign to portray Trump as too old and unreliable in his mental sharpness.
Concerns about election interference—especially from foreign entities like Russia—have been prevalent in the previous two U.S. elections. Currently, U.S. authorities are looking into potential Russian influences on the upcoming election, with both Lindén and Andersson agreeing that the primary threat to the integrity of the elections lies within Trump and his campaign. Lindén stated unequivocally, “Trump and his campaign are preparing to commit election fraud.”
