Starting today, residents of Iceland can now obtain identification documents at the Hagkaup store in Skeifan. This initiative is a pilot project by the Icelandic National Registry aimed at enhancing service delivery to the public.

The first document was issued at the Skeifan location today, allowing visitors to request their passports and ID cards at this central location. The project will run for six months in collaboration with Hagkaup.

According to a statement, this new service will enable individuals to access identification documents conveniently in the capital area. There are ample free parking spaces available, improved accessibility for people with disabilities, and identification services will be available 24/7.

Julia Thorvaldsdottir, director at the National Registry, described this initiative as a step towards providing better service. The idea had been under consideration for some time, and reaching out to Hagkaup seemed a fitting choice, in line with the Registry’s objectives. She expressed gratitude towards Hagkaup’s management for their swift and effective collaboration to bring this idea to fruition.

Hagkaup staff responsible for issuing the documents received special training, ensuring compliance with the same security standards established by the National Registry. Applicants will have seven days to collect their documents from the store once ready; otherwise, they must retrieve them from the National Registry.

Sigurður Reynaldsson, the manager of Hagkaup, emphasized the store’s commitment to finding innovative solutions to meet customer needs and praised the partnership with the National Registry. He looks forward to providing this valuable service to patrons.
