Debris from a barge that fell into the sea near Rauma has not prompted any rescue operations by the Western Finland Coast Guard. Last Wednesday, approximately 500 cubic meters of birch logs fell from the barge west of the Rauma lighthouse. According to the Coast Guard, the logs have drifted northward due to currents and winds, but there is limited information about their current location.
“Based on a civilian observation, logs were reported to be in the Säppi area of Luvia over the weekend. We have no other sightings, but we haven’t actively searched for them,” said Anssi Somppi, the head of maritime rescue for the Western Finland Coast Guard.
Somppi noted that the birch logs have spread across a large area, with most of them already washed ashore. “Cottage owners can collect wood from there for next summer,” he added.
The Coast Guard continues to advise boaters to exercise caution in the area.
