At the end of May, parents of students at Vantaa’s Viertola School received a message stating that there would be no discussions about the shooting incident during the school’s spring celebration. School officials emphasized the importance of moving forward and ensuring every child has the right to a normal school experience.

In April, a sixth-grade boy discharged four shots at the school, resulting in the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy and seriously injuring two sixth-grade girls. More information on the investigation into this incident is expected to be released later this week. The shooting took place in a building known as Paviljonki. According to instructions from crisis workers, students who witnessed the event were moved to another building for the remainder of the school year, after which regular classes resumed in the original classroom.

Some parents of incoming first graders expressed concerns about their children being taught in the same spaces where the shooting occurred. To address this, a parent meeting was held in May, which included a visit to the classroom. Officials reported that the teaching environment has since been positive, with no further concerns voiced this autumn.

Following the incident, Viertola School aimed to provide joyful experiences for students. Various organizations offered support, including a visit from a popular artist and local businesses donating snack packs for school trips.

According to Vantaa’s basic education director, Ilkka Kalo, most of the school’s staff have returned to normal operations, although some individuals still feel the impact of the events.

As of autumn, the school environment has settled back into its routine, with the first school day after summer break proceeding without incident, and the sixth graders have moved on to Peltola School, which is prepared to provide support if needed. Discussions regarding the shooting have not taken place at recent parent meetings, as the school community focuses on maintaining a normal environment for the children.
