Survey reveals high satisfaction levels among long-distance transport users in Helsinki and Tampere
A recent survey reveals high satisfaction levels among users of long-distance transport in Helsinki and Tampere, with 74% of respondents reporting they are satisfied or very satisfied with their travel experiences. Conversely, 26% expressed varying degrees of dissatisfaction. The findings challenge common perceptions that public transport is slow and expensive. Many users noted that the quick travel times and punctuality enhance their overall experience.
“Many choose trains or buses because they are the fastest and most comfortable options between Helsinki and Tampere,” said Jukka-Pekka Pitkänen, head of smart transport services at Ramboll. Affordability was often cited as the primary reason for opting for public transport, although some participants felt fares were too high.
Among the challenges reported, interactions with fellow passengers, particularly late at night, negatively impacted travel experiences. Satisfaction levels tended to dip around 10 PM, returning to normal only by 6 AM. Pitkänen noted that complaints about “annoying fellow passengers” were prevalent during evening hours, suggesting that higher noise levels on weekends and late nights can lead to discomfort.
Conversely, bus passengers expressed slightly higher satisfaction than train travelers, praising bus drivers for their service. According to the survey, the presence of personnel significantly improves the travel experience, especially in the evenings when passengers may feel unsafe due to disruptive behavior. Factors such as lighting at stations also play a role in passengers’ feelings of security.
The survey, conducted by consultancy firm Ramboll and carried out by Happy or Not, gathered responses from 3,580 individuals across seven train and bus terminals in Helsinki and Tampere throughout September.
