Five MPs ousted from Independence Party in Reykjavik following local elections in Iceland

In recent developments within the Independence Party following local elections, five members of parliament have been ousted due to dissatisfaction with the party’s performance. The newly appointed party leader in the Northwest constituency, Ólafur Adolfsson, stated that the departure of these MPs is tied to discontent among party members.

The elections have resulted in significant leadership changes, affecting all areas outside of Reykjavik. Votes were held in four constituencies, with uncontested elections in the Southwest constituency and South, where Bjarni Benediktsson and Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir were re-elected unopposed. In the Southwest, Jón Gunnarsson lost to Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, the party’s deputy leader. Meanwhile, Birgir Þórarinsson and Ásmundur Friðriksson were unable to secure seats in the South and will not return to parliament.

In the Northeast constituency, incumbent Njáll Trausti Friðbertsson lost his seat to newcomer Jens Garðar Helgason, who now takes the top position, while Berglind Ósk Guðmundsdóttir, who was in second place, also lost her seat.

Ólafur noted that the election results were anticipated given the party’s historically low poll ratings, stating, “With such widespread dissatisfaction, it is expected to see a shift in leadership.” He expressed optimism about the upcoming challenges, emphasizing the need to connect with voters in the limited time available before the next elections.
