Fire at Stuðlar treatment center in Iceland results in tragedy and injuries

A tragic fire at the Stuðlar treatment center in Iceland has resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy and injuries to a staff member, who is now in stable condition. The Central Investigation Unit of the police is currently conducting an initial investigation into the incident, with teams interviewing relevant parties and examining the scene. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and there are no indications of arson as of yet.

There were seven children present at the facility when the fire broke out early yesterday morning, four of whom were in emergency care. The acting director of the center stated that all children have since been safely relocated, either back to their homes or to another facility, Vog. Following the fire, they have arranged for temporary housing at Vog, which permits adequate separation from regular activities to ensure the safety of the children.

Concerns had previously been raised about an unsuitable number of children with diverse issues being housed at Stuðlar, which may have compromised their safety. The director acknowledged the need for improving safety protocols, particularly regarding preventing access to fire hazards.
