Sigríður Á. Andersen joins Center Party to lead Reykjavik list in Iceland’s upcoming elections

Sigríður Á. Andersen, a former member of the Independence Party and former Minister of Justice in Iceland, has announced her decision to represent the Center Party in the upcoming elections. She will lead one of the party’s lists for the Reykjavik constituencies.

Sigríður stated in a recent interview that she has been following the Center Party’s positions and found them aligned with her views on several issues. When approached at the beginning of the week to consider this opportunity, she felt compelled to do so and concluded that there was a need to further advocate for these perspectives. This prompted her to see the Center Party as an appropriate platform.

Sigríður previously served as a member of the Althing, Iceland’s parliament, for the Reykjavik South constituency from 2015 to 2021. She was also Minister of Justice from 2017 to 2019, and had been an alternate member of parliament for the Independence Party since 2008. She noted that her political involvement began at the age of 15 when she joined Heimdall, the youth organization of the Independence Party. Despite her shift to the Center Party, Sigríður expressed that she would maintain her friendships within the Independence Party and continue to have an interest in its ideologies.

The 2024 parliamentary elections in Iceland are approaching, bringing changes and new candidates into the political landscape.
