The Icelandic police have reported that young boys in the country are facing sexual exploitation similar to that perpetrated by international criminal organizations. There are signs that organized crime groups have been targeting Icelandic youths through Instagram.

In a proactive measure, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced a plan to address sexual violence on its platform. Key initiatives include automatically blurring nude images sent via direct messages to protect recipients.

The Chief of Police has emphasized changes on Instagram in response to these exploitation tactics. Specifically, teenagers under 16 will no longer be allowed to switch their accounts from private to public without parental consent. Additionally, adjustments will be made to links and sharing options on user accounts to disrupt the operational patterns of organized crime groups. The Chief of Police notably referenced the “Yahoo boys” in this context, a term used to describe such criminal networks.

The police are currently investigating whether similar incidents have occurred in Iceland. Although no confirmed cases have been reported, the police acknowledge that they are examining situations that closely resemble the established patterns of exploitation.

Those who believe they have been victims of such violence are encouraged to seek assistance through emergency services or additional resources provided on relevant websites. The issue underscores the growing concerns about online safety and the need for heightened protection for vulnerable individuals against exploitation.
