Eleven political parties announce candidacies for Alþingi elections in Iceland

Eleven political parties have announced their candidacies for the upcoming elections to the Icelandic Parliament, Alþingi, scheduled for November 30. Only the Pirate Party will hold a primary election, while the rest are finalizing their candidate lists.

With just over two weeks remaining until the submission deadline for candidate lists on October 31, there appears to be significant turnover within the parliament. Several incumbent MPs have declared they will not seek re-election.

The People’s Party (F) has nearly completed its list and will announce it soon, according to party leader Inga Sæland.

The Progressive Party (B) is conducting constituency meetings across the country on October 19 to vote on their candidates. The party leader will run for a second place in his district.

The Centre Party (M) has formed a nomination committee that encourages potential candidates to apply before midnight tonight.

The Pirates (P) will commence their primary elections on October 20, concluding on October 22 at 16:00.

The Social Democratic Alliance (S) has begun preparing its list, which will be finalized by October 26, followed by a vote on the proposal.

The Independence Party (D) is holding regional council meetings on October 20 to determine the composition of their lists.

The Left-Green Movement (V) has consulted all its district councils regarding candidate selection and has opted for a nomination process due to time constraints.

Other parties, such as Responsible Future (Y) and the Democracy Party, have also announced their intention to run, with both seeking to establish candidate lists nationwide. The Democracy Party has not yet begun collecting endorsements, as it requires official recognition from the Ministry of Justice before doing so.
