New fertility clinic Sunna opens in Kópavogur, Iceland, boosting competition in local market

A new fertility clinic, Sunna, officially opens today in Kópavogur, Iceland, marking the emergence of competition in the local fertility treatment market. Until now, Livio has been the sole provider of such services in the country. Initial clients have already begun their treatments at Sunna, demonstrating a significant demand for fertility services, which has been largely unserved.

Sunna is located in Evuhúsi at Urðarhvarf 8, and many view this as a pivotal moment, given the considerable demand for fertility treatments in Iceland. Thórir Harðarson, the owner of Sunna, emphasized the importance of offering a choice for patients, stating that competition is beneficial for the industry. Between 2018 and 2022, over 2,000 individuals or couples underwent assisted reproductive treatments in Iceland.

The clinic has established partnerships with three sperm banks—one in the United States and two in Denmark. Thórir mentioned that while the treatments can be expensive, the costs are comparable to those in neighboring countries, and profit is not the primary driving force behind the clinic’s operations.

On the opening day, a celebration is planned with the presence of the health minister and numerous guests. The event will include a toast to everyone involved in bringing the clinic to fruition and an opportunity for attendees to view the facility, including a demonstration of sperm samples. Sunna officially begins its operations today after a soft launch, and Thórir expressed excitement for what the clinic will offer its clients moving forward.
