On September 16, NRK TV and the NRK Super app ceased functioning on several devices, including LG Smart TVs manufactured between 2015 and 2017, Samsung Smart TVs, the oldest model of Apple TV, and PlayStation 4 and 5 consoles. Users are advised to purchase a streaming box, which costs between 500 and 2000 NOK. However, not everyone is keen to make this investment.

Christian Kristiansen, who recently found the NRK app no longer works on his nearly ten-year-old television, expressed his frustration and stated his intention to stop using NRK services. He recounted how the app had previously worked well until it abruptly vanished, particularly during the holiday season when he often watched NRK content.

Kristiansen criticized the reliance on technological compatibility, asserting that it’s troubling how different companies determine the usability of the hardware individuals own. He highlighted that this issue is particularly significant given NRK’s responsibility to provide reliable communications during crises, noting the transition from FM to DAB broadcast systems in recent years.

Consumer Council advisor Thomas Iversen remarked that products purchased after January 1, 2024, should last at least five years, including software updates, though this does not apply to third-party apps. Many users experience significant functionality loss when apps stop supporting older devices, making complaints difficult, especially for outdated technology.

Bjarne Andre Myklebust, NRK’s distribution manager, acknowledged users’ frustrations but noted that technology inevitably becomes outdated. He reassured users that while older devices can still be used, some functions may not keep pace with modern requirements.

Anja Bakken Riise, leader of a sustainable development organization, echoed concerns about environmental implications, emphasizing the need for durable electronics and questioning NRK’s environmental responsibility in technology upgrades. She advocated for practices that help extend the lifecycle of devices rather than contributing to waste.
