KRP investigates cyberattacks targeting financial sector in Finland
The Finnish National Criminal Police (KRP) has initiated a criminal investigation into cyberattacks targeting the financial sector in Finland. The current criminal charge is serious disruption of telecommunications. KRP has voluntarily commenced the preliminary investigation into these cyber incidents. Discussions have taken place with the prosecuting authorities, as the case involves a charge subject to official prosecution and carries international and societal significance, according to a KRP statement.
Denial-of-service attacks have particularly affected Nordea since early autumn. At this stage, the police will not provide further details about the investigation’s content, the parties involved, suspects, or the timeline, stated Chief Investigation Officer, Crime Commissioner Markus Saario from KRP. In these preliminary investigations, the police typically collaborate with various authorities, including international partners.
