Möller announces candidacy for Samfylkingin party in Iceland’s parliamentary elections

Alma D. Möller, the Icelandic Chief Epidemiologist, has announced her candidacy for the South-Western constituency on the list of the Samfylkingin party in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Möller has been in her role since 2018, making her the first woman to hold this position in Iceland.

With a background in anesthesia and intensive care medicine, Möller holds a specialty certification and a doctorate in her field, as well as a master’s degree in health service management and public health. She has served as the executive director of the surgical department at the Landspítali University Hospital and as the head of intensive care units at different Landspítali locations. Additionally, she worked at the University Hospital in Lund, Sweden, from 1993 to 2002, holding management positions in anesthesia departments while also working as a specialist in pediatric intensive care.

Möller gained nationwide recognition during her leadership in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, collaborating closely with Víðir Reynisson, the Chief of the National Police, and Þórólfur Guðnason, the then Chief Epidemiologist. The trio was awarded the Icelandic Falcon Order by the President of Iceland on June 17, 2020, for their contributions to public health and their response to COVID-19.

As the political landscape heats up with the approaching elections, parties are gearing up to finalize their candidate lists, with Möller aiming to secure a prominent spot representing her party.
