Pilot whales spotted in Svínoyarfjørður area, Hvannasund designated as protected zone

A pod of pilot whales has been spotted this afternoon in the Svínoyarfjørður area. The pod is small, estimated to consist of between 20 to 40 whales, and is expected to migrate towards Hvannasund.

In response to the sighting, Jacob Vestergaard, the local magistrate, has designated a quarter of the area surrounding the pod as a protected zone.

As a precautionary measure, the tunnels leading north over the mountain have been closed, and police are managing traffic flows south of the Árnafjørður tunnel.
