The Finnish government has proposed that only students eligible for free education will receive school transport subsidies in the future. The Cabinet made this decision during a plenary session on Thursday, approving the legislative proposal to be forwarded to Parliament. The law is expected to come into effect in August of next year.

In practical terms, this means that school transport subsidies will only be available to students aged 20 or younger. According to Finland’s compulsory education law, education is free until the end of the calendar year in which a student turns 20.
