Finnish Tax Administration to open pop-up tax offices in Lapland tourist centers this November
The Finnish Tax Administration will open a pop-up tax office at two tourist centers in Lapland this November. This temporary service will be available for three days, starting in Saariselkä and then moving to Ylläs at the end of the month. The initiative comes in response to the reduction of tax office services in Lapland, which has raised concerns among local businesses.
Companies have expressed worries about the potential need to transport hundreds of seasonal workers long distances from Northern Lapland to Rovaniemi. Foreign workers must visit a tax office to obtain a personal identification number (PID) and a tax card. Until now, seasonal employees arriving in the northernmost part of Lapland could receive their PID from the tax offices in Ivalo or Kittilä; however, those offices have shifted to remote services since the beginning of September and will cease operations entirely next year. Last year, tax offices in Tornio, Pello, Sodankylä, and Kemijärvi also closed their doors. The Kemi tax office is scheduled to shut down in August 2025, leaving only the Rovaniemi tax office in Lapland.
The temporary tax office in Saariselkä will operate starting November 19, while the one in Ylläs will open on November 26, with both locations available for three days. Further updates on this situation will follow.
