Political parties finalize candidate lists for parliamentary elections in Iceland

Political parties in Iceland are actively preparing their candidate lists for the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 30. The deadline for submissions is noon on October 31. To be eligible to run, candidates must have voting rights in Iceland, a clean reputation, and cannot be Supreme Court judges.

A total of 63 parliamentary seats are available, but not everyone who wishes to run will secure a spot. Each party aiming for nationwide representation must identify 63 individuals for their lists, with an equal number of candidates required in each electoral district corresponding to the number of parliament members from that district. All candidate lists must be finalized by October 31, marking the closure of the registration window for these elections.

Ástríður Jóhannesdóttir, the director of the National Election Commission, recently discussed the candidate lists, emphasizing the need for parties to locate approximately one thousand individuals with unblemished records who are not Supreme Court judges.
