Sweden’s surplus target threatened by recent surplus committee developments
Since the 1990s, Swedish fiscal policy has aimed for a budget surplus. Through growth and a restrictive financial approach, Sweden has transformed from having one of the highest national debts in Europe to one of the lowest. This surplus target has been supported over the years by finance ministers from both the Social Democratic Party and the Moderate Party. However, developments from the surplus committee on Thursday indicate this may be about to change.
