Finnish Red Cross sends medical supplies to Southern Lebanon amid escalating conflict

The Finnish Red Cross is sending medical supplies to Southern Lebanon, including a surgical table and surgical instruments. These items were loaded onto a truck at the organization’s logistics center in Tampere and will be dispatched today, Wednesday. The equipment will first be transported to the Red Cross in Geneva before being delivered to Lebanon through coordinated international transport.

The number of injured and displaced individuals in Lebanon is rising sharply due to an escalating conflict between Israel and Lebanon, significantly increasing the demand for healthcare services. According to the United Nations, around 690,000 people have fled their homes, and approximately 400,000 have left the country, which has a population of about 5.8 million.

The medical supplies are intended to support hospitals in Lebanon backed by the International Committee of the Red Cross. Marko Korhonen, head of international disaster relief at the Finnish Red Cross, emphasized that the Lebanese Red Cross is currently the primary provider of emergency medical services and blood donation activities in the country and often the sole organization able to bring aid to conflict zones.

Hospitals and ambulances have been damaged in Israeli strikes, resulting in injuries to several Lebanese Red Cross paramedics and volunteers since early October. Ritva Lahti, head of the logistics center, stated that their responsibility is to ensure the safety of Red Cross personnel.

The Finnish Red Cross currently does not have staff in Lebanon, making operation during combat between both parties particularly challenging. Lahti noted that they are prepared to send more supplies if needed, with available resources in their inventory for field hospitals, operating rooms, X-ray services, and emergency shelters.
