Today marks the 30th anniversary of Finland’s advisory referendum on European Union membership. In the 1994 vote, 56.9 percent of the participating voters supported joining the EU, with a voter turnout of 74 percent. The Finnish Parliament approved the country’s accession to the EU in November of the same year. Finland officially became a member of the EU at the beginning of 1995, alongside Sweden and Austria.
