A 66-year-old man and 29-year-old Janne Puhakka lived together in a charming residential area near a green space until a few weeks ago. Neighbors describe Puhakka as exceptionally kind and likable. “Everyone in the neighborhood liked him,” said Topi Heikonen, a local resident deeply shaken by the recent tragedy.

“What did Janne mean to you living here in Esbo?” asked a neighbor. “He was a role model. We are all very sad now.” Both men were known for their friendly demeanor, and residents are stunned after the incident. “This was very surprising for all of us. They seemed so happy together after being partners for a decade,” a neighbor noted.

Puhakka reportedly visited their former shared home on a Sunday to handle some practical matters after moving out weeks prior. Finnish police stated that the relationship between the accused and the deceased had ended several weeks before the visit. It was during this time that Puhakka was tragically killed.

The case has captivated Finland, particularly due to Puhakka’s status as the first openly gay professional ice hockey player in the country. Miikka Hujanen, a crime journalist, highlighted the unusual nature of the incident occurring within what appeared to be a successful relationship between two men. “This middle-class environment is not where one would expect such a crime to happen,” he remarked.

The murder of the renowned ice hockey player has drawn significant media attention across Finland.
