On March 14, 1940, a severe storm struck, causing three boats to be delayed in returning to Sands. This led to a harrowing night for the crew, who first had to abandon one boat and subsequently another. Ultimately, 20 men found themselves cramped in a boat that could hold less than ten.

“I can’t imagine how it would have felt in Sands if they hadn’t made it back,” said Kristian Oskar Henriksen, one of the individuals advocating for a memorial plaque to commemorate the joyful moment when all 20 men returned safely the next day.

The memorial plaque has now been affixed at the sunset point located on Ljósafløtti in Sands. According to Henriksen, it serves as a meaningful tribute to the village.
