Research by Pekka Matomäki at University of Jyväskylä highlights benefits of high-intensity training for endurance

A recent dissertation by Pekka Matomäki at the University of Jyväskylä reveals significant findings about endurance training. The research indicates that low-intensity training enhances endurance at low power levels but does not impact performance at high power levels. Conversely, high-intensity training improves performance across both high and low power outputs.

Interestingly, the pleasure derived from training does not correlate with its effectiveness. The study emphasizes that solely engaging in low-intensity training is insufficient to enhance overall endurance, even when performed in large volumes. In contrast, high-intensity workouts provide a more comprehensive impact on performance. Matomäki suggests that incorporating some level of intensity is crucial for fitness improvements. For instance, performing a half-hour training session once a week at a high intensity yields the most effective results.

While past research has often overlooked low-intensity workouts in favor of high-intensity effects, Matomäki’s study sought to explore the impacts of both training types on endurance. The research involved two groups: one focused on high-intensity training, performing typical high-intensity intervals on stationary bicycles, while the other engaged in prolonged low-intensity cycling outdoors. The low-intensity training resembled a leisurely walk, whereas participants in the high-intensity group cycled near maximum effort.

Additionally, the results suggest that even if a training session feels uncomfortable, it can still be highly beneficial. Matomäki’s dissertation, titled “Effects of a 10-Week Low and High Intensity Training Intervention on Performance Abilities – With a Special Reference to Durability,” will be defended on October 18, 2024.
