Russian student released from detention amid investigation in Kajaani
A Russian student suspected of serious regulatory violations in Kajaani has been released from pre-trial detention. Instead of being held in custody, he is now subject to a travel ban, according to the Kainuu District Court.
The twenty-something male is believed to have been part of a group transporting dual-use goods—luxury items suitable for military use—from Finland to Russia. Along with him, at least one other Russian male in his twenties and a young Russian woman are also suspected. All three were taken into custody in May. While two of the suspects were released over the summer, police have indicated that they are still under investigation.
The serious regulatory violation is alleged to have occurred in 2022, during which the trio lived and studied in Kajaani. They were apprehended in an operation at the facilities and dormitory of Kainuu Vocational College. In May, police stated that the suspects were students at the institution, although the school is not otherwise connected to the case. Additionally, police mentioned that there are other individuals involved in the investigation.
Maria Vuorivirta, the lead investigator from the Criminal Police, stated that none of the suspects are currently in custody related to this case. Instead, the suspects face other measures, including travel bans. Vuorivirta did not disclose the exact number of individuals currently under suspicion, though as of August, she indicated that more than five people could be implicated.
The investigation is ongoing, and Vuorivirta noted that the complexity and international scope of the case have slowed progress. The inquiry began after an individual reported that their information was used without consent to order shipments. Investigators are examining purchases made using false information from both Finnish and international online shops.
