Man charged with arson in Nilsiä, Finland as prosecution seeks prison sentence
A man has been charged in connection with a fire that occurred in a row house in Nilsiä, Kuopio, and the prosecution is seeking a prison sentence without parole at the North Savonia District Court. The fire, which broke out at Laatokantie 8, destroyed three apartments but fortunately did not result in any injuries.
According to the prosecutor, the man allegedly set the fire at night, targeting the exterior storage area and terrace of one of the apartments. The flames spread from the terrace into the roof space and affected two additional apartments, causing significant fire and smoke damage.
The prosecutor has stated that the fire posed a general risk to life or health and resulted in a major economic loss. They are seeking a minimum of two years of imprisonment for the 57-year-old man. Additionally, he may be required to reimburse the state for any evidence-related costs and pay a crime victim fee of 80 euros.
The man is also expected to remain in custody if the sentence is determined to be at least two years. He has been detained since August in connection with this case. The North Savonia District Court arrested him in August on suspicion of arson and aggravated property damage. He is also suspected of setting fire to a waste shed on Laatokantie in July.
