A man in his sixties died in a workplace accident in Stykkishólmur yesterday. The incident is currently under investigation by the West Iceland police.

Authorities received a report of the accident shortly before 10 AM, prompting the dispatch of a Coast Guard helicopter, which was later cancelled. According to a police official, the community in Stykkishólmur is in mourning.

This incident marks the fourth workplace fatality within a short period in Iceland this year. A man in his forties died in Urriðaholt at the end of August, and another workplace accident resulted in a death at a construction site in Árborg in mid-September. Earlier in June, a man died from injuries sustained in a workplace accident in Akranes. In January, a man working on crack fillings in Grindavík fell into a fissure and lost his life.

This string of fatal accidents has raised concerns regarding workplace safety standards in the country, as three deaths were reported in construction-related incidents this year alone. The community’s grief highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
