The newly established premises of the Icelandic Arthritis Association, located at Brekkuhúsum 1 in Reykjavík, will officially open tomorrow to commemorate International Arthritis Day. The association’s chairperson highlights that this new facility will significantly enhance its operations.
The new building features ground-level access, ample parking, and improved facilities compared to the previous location in Ármúla. Dóra Ingvadóttir, the association’s chairwoman, emphasized that the premises are completely newly furnished and equipped with advanced video conferencing technology. This will allow the organization to provide education and outreach to members across the country, fostering inclusivity for those unable to visit the site.
Ingvadóttir stated the new facility offers excellent opportunities for physical and occupational therapy, with good accessibility for individuals with disabilities. She noted that while the association does not have precise statistics on the total number of people with arthritis in Iceland, a general rule of thumb suggests that one in five residents may be affected by arthritis at some point in their lives.
Globally, there are over 200 diagnosed arthritic conditions, with some being quite rare. The major categories include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia, representing significant health challenges for many individuals. The opening of the new premises marks a pivotal moment for the Icelandic Arthritis Association, enhancing its potential to support those impacted by these conditions.
