Today marks the official start of the mussel season in Nykøbing Mors, Denmark, where celebration and gourmet festivities accompany the first harvest. However, the event unfolds against a troubling backdrop as the mussel fishing industry faces significant challenges.

Jan Christensen, the managing director of Vilsund Blue, a company that has been producing mussels for over 40 years, expresses serious concerns. New and stricter environmental regulations are threatening the mussel fishery in the Limfjord. The company is currently operating at only 30% of its production capacity due to insufficient mussel supplies entering the factory. Christensen warns, “We cannot cut back any further. If we do not receive more raw materials, we face either shutting down or something even more dire.”

The Limfjord, central to Danish mussel fishing, is home to about 20 active mussel boats and supports around 70 jobs at Vilsund Blue. Fishermen use large nets to scrape the seabed, but recent environmental policies have pushed them into deeper waters, aiming to protect eelgrass and prevent damage from fishing activities. Professor Jens Kjerulf Petersen from DTU Aqua explains that fishing activities have little impact on oxygen depletion during critical periods, but mussel dredging is heavily scrutinized due to its potential ecological damage.

Vilsund Blue fears that unless conditions improve, Danish mussel production may falter, paving the way for imports, particularly from Chile, at the expense of local sustainability. The Danish Minister of Environment acknowledges the need for a balanced approach and expresses a desire to negotiate a path forward for the fishery sector, emphasizing the importance of eelgrass for aquatic health.
