According to police, the cleanliness and livability of urban areas significantly impact safety and the level of disruptive behavior. In Helsinki, Vaasanpuistikko, commonly known as Piritori in Sörnäinen, has become infamous as a meeting place for drug users, closely monitored by law enforcement. After a renovation costing around 1.2 million euros, the revitalized area reopened to the public at the end of July. However, the question remains: has the user demographic changed, or does it continue to serve as a gathering spot for intoxicated individuals?

At a neighboring record store, Rolling Records, seller Tero Huotari reports no noticeable improvement, stating that the same disruptive behaviors persist. The only relief is that intoxicated individuals no longer congregate directly in front of the store, as the narrow passage during renovations has been removed. “They no longer urinate in the stairwells and against building walls but in the new plantings,” Huotari adds.

Heta Ahonen, manager of a nearby S-market, notes that the same disruptive individuals frequent the area, although they do not bother bystanders, allowing her to arrive and leave work safely. The renovation, executed by the City of Helsinki, aimed to make the park more transparent by adding lighting and shorter plantings, discouraging shady activities.

While some reports indicate ongoing drug dealing post-renovation, police believe the overall direction is positive, noting a decrease in overt disruptive behavior. Increased police presence and community events are now held there. However, the response is temporary, as problem behaviors tend to shift to surrounding areas.

Police highlight the crucial role of active residents and city employees in creating a clean and well-lit environment, which generally deters disruptive individuals. The city plans further improvements nearby in Katri Vala Park, with renovations starting mid-October aimed at making the area more pleasant and peaceful.
