Independence Party meets in Valhöll amid tensions in coalition government

The Independence Party held a parliamentary group meeting today in Valhöll, convened on short notice, around 3:30 PM.

Hildur Sverrisdóttir, chairperson of the party’s parliamentary group, remarked on the heavy circumstances concerning the governing coalition, asserting that many options were considered regarding the current challenging situation. She emphasized that the leadership has a clear mandate from the party members to guide the party through any developments.

Bjarni Benediktsson, the party leader, noted that the economic situation is improving, contradicting suggestions that any member called for a dissolution of the government. He clarified that no such proposal was made during the meeting, although discussions revolved around various possibilities.

The immediate concern arises from doubts about the government’s ability to handle legislative affairs this winter, prompting the gathering.
