Northern lights surge in Denmark due to peak solar activity

The northern lights are currently more frequent and particularly intense due to a specific phase in the solar cycle, resulting in increased visibility in Denmark. Astrophysicist Michael Linden-Vørnle from DTU Space explains that solar activity generates the auroras. When solar eruptions occur, they affect the Earth’s magnetic field, leading to the stunning displays of northern lights.
We are approaching a peak in solar activity, which is expected to occur in early 2025. This peak is anticipated to be stronger than previously predicted. Linden-Vørnle encourages people to venture outdoors when they see posts on social media announcing beautiful auroras.
Although it is not always possible to see multiple colors in the northern lights, recent sightings have included red hues, which indicate particularly strong activity in Denmark. The most common color observed is green. The auroras are best viewed in areas with minimal light pollution, making rural or natural settings ideal for sightings.
Recently, the northern lights were visible in several cities, including Holstebro, where impressive images were captured.
Social media has transformed how people connect with the phenomenon. Since the last peak in solar activity approximately 11 years ago, platforms like Facebook have enabled communities to share tips on where and when to observe the auroras. The Facebook group “Nordlysvarsel i Danmark,” with over 250,000 members, is a popular space for users to post beautiful photos and share sightings.
In Denmark, auroras typically occur during intense solar storms and are most prevalent during active solar periods, which occur roughly every eleven years. During these heightened times, it is possible to see northern lights several days each month.
