Environmental Board Dismisses Skeiða- og Gnúpverjahreppur’s Complaint Against Búrfell Wind Farm Permit
The Environmental and Natural Resources Appeals Board has dismissed a complaint from the municipality of Skeiða- og Gnúpverjahreppur regarding a power generation permit for a wind farm at Búrfell. The board stated that governmental authorities do not have the right to appeal decisions made by other governmental bodies unless specifically provided for by law.
The Skeiða- og Gnúpverjahreppur municipality had contested the proposed wind farm at every stage of the process since the Icelandic Parliament designated the area for utilization in June 2022. The mayor expressed surprise and disappointment at the board’s ruling, asserting that the municipality would discuss the matter further in the coming days, likely awaiting the outcome of another case involving a complaint submitted by the organization Náttúrugrið, which has also contested a power generation permit for a different area.
The board also rejected Náttúrugrið’s request to halt construction activities related to the wind farm while their appeal is under consideration. The mayor emphasized the necessity to complete a strategic plan for wind energy and the distribution of revenues between the state and municipalities before the first wind farm is constructed in Iceland.
As the decision moves forward, the local council remains engaged in discussions about the implications of wind energy development and its management within the region.
