Albert Guðmundsson acquitted of sexual misconduct charges in Iceland

Albert Guðmundsson, the football player, has been acquitted of charges related to sexual misconduct. The court found his testimony more credible than that of the woman who accused him. Notably, there was no medical examination conducted on the woman at the emergency department on the night she sought assistance.

The case primarily relied on the accounts of both Albert and the woman, alongside witness testimonies. The judge concluded that numerous discrepancies existed between their narratives, indicating vastly different experiences of the alleged incident. Albert faced accusations concerning an encounter with a woman in her thirties last year.

The court proceedings were closed, which is customary in sexual assault cases. The complainant sought compensation of 3 million ISK for damages. Throughout the proceedings, Albert maintained his innocence.

Additionally, the court highlighted that evidence in the case was limited and inadequate. A nurse from the emergency department testified that the woman had initially visited the clinic on June 26, 2023, but no examination took place. The nurse stated that the woman had simply been interviewed in the waiting room, contrary to standard procedures. No notification about the alleged assault relating to the woman’s genitals was communicated to the emergency unit.

Both parties agreed that some form of sexual interaction occurred, yet there was a dispute regarding consent, with the woman asserting that Albert acted without her permission. The court ultimately concluded that the evidence did not sufficiently prove that Albert had engaged in any non-consensual acts as charged, leading to his acquittal of all claims. All associated costs will be covered by the state.
